About This Spot

Stepping into On the Rocks feels like entering a quiet sanctuary tucked amid the vibrant pulse of New York City. It’s a space where the hum of conversation and the gentle clink of glasses draw you into a slower, more deliberate rhythm—a refuge for those seeking to unwind with intention rather than noise. The intimate setting invites you to settle in comfortably, encouraging shared moments and thoughtful exploration over hurried visits.

Here, the atmosphere is warm and inviting without being flashy, fostering a sense of camaraderie among strangers and friends alike. The bartenders act as both guides and companions, patient and attuned to every guest’s taste journey. Whether you’re a seasoned whiskey lover or curious to discover new spirits, their thoughtful recommendations turn a simple drink into a personal experience—each sip a story unfolding. This is a place where knowledge meets hospitality, where the menu is navigated through insightful conversation rather than a checklist.

The carefully curated selection—from rich bourbons and smoky scotches to delicate flights of Japanese whiskey—feels less like a display and more like an open invitation to savor the craft behind each bottle. You might find yourself drawn into a tasting flight, savoring nuances and flavors that reveal themselves with every pour and thoughtful pause. The food offerings, modest but satisfying, complement the drinks perfectly, balancing the experience with flavors that feel familiar yet thoughtfully assembled.

On the Rocks doesn’t just serve drinks—it fosters moments of discovery, where stories mingle with the aromas of caramel and charred oak, and connections form quietly in the glow of warm light. It’s a nuanced retreat for those who appreciate whiskey’s depth and complexity but also welcome the simple joy of good company and genuine conversation.

I do not like whiskey, however, with that being said I found this to be a pleasant experience. I came with some friends who were whiskey drinkers and they also had a good time. We all did a 3 tasting flight. The bartender seemed very knowledgeable. He took the time to speak with us individually to understand what we like, our flavor profiles, and our overall preferences. Then he would step away to take inventory of what he had on the shelf to curate a tasting flight for us. Granted, if you know exactly what you want, you do not have to go through this process, but I found it to be exciting. The bottles are also set up in front of you so you know exactly what you're drinking. This is not a place where you come to take shots, but you sit, taste, enjoy your alcohol and the company around you. While I wouldn't go back by myself, I may take a friend who does like whiskey. They have a huge selection to pick from. Also if you're not into drinking straight whiskey, they will make mixed drinks with whiskey. They do not serve food so be sure to eat before hand or make a reservation elsewhere for after like we did.

I stopped by On The Rocks for the first time today and had an amazing experience. Lamar and Patrick were behind the bar and couldn’t have been more welcoming, they were patient, knowledgeable, and helped me explore a few whiskeys until I found something I absolutely loved (even though I showed up pretty clueless about what I wanted). I also had the chance to meet the owner, Howie, who was just as kind and down-to-earth. The place itself is cozy, relaxed, and feels like a hidden gem in Hell’s Kitchen. Great atmosphere, great energy, and genuinely great people. Easily a 5-star spot, I’ll definitely be coming back.

a mecca for whiskey connoisseurs and fans alike. had so much fun here, great whiskey, great conversations, owner, bartenders, fellow patrons. a grownups bar for the whiskey otaku to relish in an incredible selection and institutional knowledge of all things whiskey that is astounding and so much fun. i don’t have the depth of palate for it but the conversation and personality was truly awesome.

On the Rocks is one of my favorite bars in NYC. I love the intimate atmosphere of the bar and the friendly interaction with the bartenders. They have a huge selection of whiskeys and bourbons and to my knowledge one of the only bars that allows you to do a tasting before selecting what you want poured. The bartenders are very knowledgeable and eager to help you find your next pour. But word of advice be sure to let them know what you price range is for a pour of whiskey or bourbon because the bill may surprise you when time comes to pay. But I highly recommended this bar but know it is small so when it gets busy it gets very crowded other than that it’s a great local bar in the HK area.

Don’t judge a place by its size. This small whiskey bar is a must visit for anyone who loves whiskey or wants to learn about it. Extremely knowledgeable bartenders especially Patrick who generously shares his expertise. One definitely comes out feeling a “little more educated” and maybe break some of your myths about what you thought you knew

A great place for trying out American and global whiskeys I had a great night chatting to the bartender and the other customers. A cozy and intimate hang out place

The bartender, Patrick, was unbelievably knowledgeable about the whiskey in the bar. Helped curate some flights and had some great conversation as well. Had a great time and would highly recommend visiting here. All price points are available, reasonable to very top shelf stuff.
